WALLASEY GOLF CLUB SENIOR SECTION

The Senior Section was founded in 1966. Originally for members over 60, it is now open to all members over 55. This age change has been introduced to be in line with all other clubs in our area. We are very active and hold competitions on most Mondays. These are played over twelve holes so if your legs get tired or you want to get back to the bar quickly, you are well catered for. We also have matches against other clubs and these are played over the full eighteen holes, as is the tradition with inter club matches. Home matches are played on our usual Monday morning. If you wish to play in a match, you are guaranteed a team place at some time, no matter what your standard of golf. We also have an annual match against Wallasey Ladies and you will find it most interesting, particularly the old tradition of “courtesy shots”. We have our own handicap system whereby you will receive additional strokes for your age, but your handicap will also be reduced if you win a competition, no matter what your score. Our section is open to all members of the club, so why wait? You will be made most welcome and you will find us a very friendly bunch. Just ask any senior member and he will point you in the right direction.

THE 2010 SENIOR SEASON

As we are now in February, and the Seniors section has recovered from its enforced sabbatical due to the unusual and inclement weather, our regular meetings are now back to normal

With the assistance of Andrew Ferguson, the Club’s Handicap Chairman, and Peter Torgersen, the Seniors Handicap organiser, nearly all our Seniors have now dispensed with the “i” alongside their Club handicap. It is hoped the clubs we meet on the Seniors fixture list have been, or will be, as diligent as we have before we “do battle” starting at the end of March.

SENIORS MATCHES 2010

All the Seniors fixtures are in the Club diary as printed, with the exception of our visit to Mere Golf and Country Club, which has had to be amended from Tuesday 7th September to Wednesday 8th September 2010. Needless to say the notices covering this away fixture will be clearly displayed as September comes closer.

Council have approved a fixture against Royal St David’s, Harlech, on a home and away basis. Chris Kerrin, one of our Seniors members, is Captain of St David’s this year, and has ‘thrown down the gauntlet’ to Wallasey Seniors. The gauntlet has been picked up by our Captain, Paul Andrews who, by coincidence, joined WGC at the same time as Chris Kerrin. The ‘jousts’ will take place on dates to be established.

During 2009 we were delighted to increase our numbers further, and in so doing all our competitions were very well attended. It is sincerely hoped this influx of new members may well lead to even more “old codgers” joining us. The only stipulation we make to members applying to join us is – they must be young at heart and have a sense of humour.

With regard to our “shot-gun start” and our change of lunch from a 2 course meal to a simple plate of sandwiches, chips and coffee; this proved to be most acceptable to everybody. In fact a number of clubs on our fixture list have decided to adopt this format in 2010.

The request last year from Geoff Roberts, the Match Secretary, to speed up our games to no more than 4 hours proved to be no problem whatsoever and was appreciated by everyone, none more so than Diane our Caterer.

Application to join us can be made through any member of the Seniors Committee, who will be only too pleased to take your “fiver” as subs and pass your details on to our Treasurer, Brian Corcoran. It is then up to the new member to keep his eye on the Notice Board to ensure he gains full value of being a member of the Seniors section.
